I love outdoor cooking and eating! Cooking inside isn’t nearly as fun as cooking outside. A good cooking performance is what counts to prepare a great meal. That why I’m very skeptical about choosing the right outdoor stove.

How many models are there with the Explorer series?
There are three models with the Camp Chef Explorer 14″ Stoves series:
- Explorer 2 burner stove (Model#: EX60LW)
- Explorer 2X burner stove (Model#: EX60FP)
- Stainless Explorer (Model#: EX60SS)
What are the differences between the models?
The difference between the three models lies with the facelift, and no difference in terms of cooking features or functionalities.
Explorer 2 burner stove: This is the base or the least expensive model of the Explorer series. But it has all the functionalities of the other models.
Explorer 2X burner stove: Everything remains the same as the base model, except the addition of a stainless steel faceplate that covers the back of the control knobs. The gas pipes are covered with the faceplate in this model.
Stainless Explorer: Again, everything is the same as the other two models except that the entire body is made of stainless steel. Only the burners are made of cast-iron. The wind guard and the stainless steel faceplate of 2X model are missing as well. This Camp Chef Explorer deluxe stove is especially design for humid and coastal climates to prevent rusting and ensure a long and healthy stove life.

Top Features of Camp Chef Explorer 2
We love what this portable outdoor stove can offer. Don’t let the size fool you, its portable and compact yet more powerful than most the best full-size gas cooktops.
It feels Sturdy and robust, and beautifully designed to compliment your outdoor lifestyle. This camp stove is heavy duty, and don’t be surprised if it outperforms your high-end cooktops which are 20 – 30 times costlier.
Let’s jump to the features of this awesome cooktop.
Burners with wind baffle technology
The two 30,000 BTU commercial grade cast-aluminum burners are simply awesome! That’s a whooping total of 60,000 BTUs. It’s designed to be an outdoor cooking stove beast. Usually, most 2 burner gas cooktop have less than 10,000 BTU.
For home use cooktops, more BTUs doesn’t guarantee better stove. In fact, it can be a total waste of money for burners with more than 20,000 BTUs for indoor cooking purposes. But the situation is very different when it comes to outdoor cooking.
With open and windy environment of outdoor cooking, you are bound to lose heat while cooking from any stove. Using wind shield helps, but it won’t block the wind completely.
The need for higher BTUs burner is real with outdoor cooking. We don’t recommend any stove with burner less than 20,000 BTUs for a splendid outdoor cooking experience.
These burners are also equipped with patented wind baffle burner technology that minimizes wind interference, making the stove extra efficient and extra wind resistant.
What about simmering?
Despite these being powerful burners, we don’t have much problem simmering. The burners are 3 inch away from the cooking grates, and additionally you can also lower the flame quite low. But it won’t be anything like those burners mean for simmering with low BTU.
The grates provides a large cooking area which you may have notice from the images. It’s design to accommodate heavy and large pots, pans, griddle, grill box, pizza oven, etc., you can use most of Camp Chef accessories.
These are continuous grates, designed to slide your pots and pans with ease. Continuous grates make things a lot easier when you use big pots and pans.
Wind guard is a must have accessories for outdoor stove which is included with the Explorer 2 and 2X models. If you buy the stainless steel model you have to buy wind guard separately.
The three-sided wind shield is 6 inches high, which is tall enough to protect the flame light wind. These windshield are removable when need arises.
Detachable legs for easy storage and transport
You can remove the stands/legs quite easily, making it very convenient for transport and storage. With the legs the height of the stove is 29 inches, and without the legs the height is about 7 inches.
The height of the legs doesn’t have much adjustment, maybe about two inches. But you can buy leg extensions or build one yourself. The size of the legs is about a broom handle and you can raise or lower each individual leg to level the stove on patchy ground.
The control knobs have high, medium and low heat levels. It is simple and easy to control. As mentioned, simmering is not an issue because of the distance between the burners and the cooking grates which is about 3 inches.

Areas of Improvements
The paint on the fire grate starts discoloring after using it for about 4 – 5 times. They should have used better quality Hi-Temperature paint. What we suggest is to remove the paint before use, as it becomes difficult to remove after use without living residue and repaint them with Hi-Temp paint.
The screws used to hold the extension legs are made of plastics; it will be less durable than metal screws for sure. Replacing them with metal screws is advisable. Except for minor issues, if you read any Camp Chef Explorer review most product owners have great anticipations for the product.
Cam Chef Explorer 2 outdoor stove is clearly designed to do some real cooking outdoor. The massive burners when bundled with the right accessories can be a total bliss for any outdoor cooking experience. Easy to assemble and dismantle, this stove is ready for any adventure trips.
